Icebox

All-in-One Media Entertainment Center for the Kitchen

The iCEBOX was a unique consumer entertainment device combining Internet, LCD Television, DVD/CD player, FM Radio, and Home Video Monitoring with a touchscreen, washable keyboard and washable remote. It had a countertop and under-cabinet version. The small start-up company had been acquired by major consumer appliances manufacturer, Salton, Inc.*

I was hired as a technical writer to create a Help system, but quickly joined the Product Management team.

What I did:

  • Conducted a deep competitive analysis and managed the product roadmap. The iCEBOX was unique in the market space but had indirect competition with a handful of Internet-enabled televisions and multimedia devices, including Apple’s new All-in-One, the iMac.
  • Defined functional requirements and user interactions for new Messenger and Recipes modules on the iCEBOX, as well as other functional updates.
  • Salton partnered with Westinghouse to create a line of “connected appliances” to include the iCEBOX as the “hub” for controlling a connected coffee maker, bread maker and alarm clock. I defined functional requirements and user interactions for a new module for managing connections and controlling the connected appliances.
  • Created and managed localized user documentation for US and Europe, including web-based Help.
  • Defined requirements and wrote content for marketing collateral, including a complete overhaul of all corporate and product web sites.
  • Produced and scripted an interactive Flash-based demo used at CES.
