Captura

Enterprise Expense Management Software

I started my tech career with a 3-month technical writing contract at Captura Software, a small start-up. I was promptly hired as Employee #13 and soon advanced to Documentation Manager. At first I single-handedly developed help systems for the client- and server-side applications, award-winning print manuals for end-users and administrators, an installation guide for Client Services and a QuickStart guide all rebranded specifically for multiple major clients and channels, such as Merrill-Lynch and the top two travel international travel agencies.

While writing user documentation for software in process and not fully specified, I found myself inadvertently making guesses about the interactions based on mockups. The development team often adopted my “design” and I became part of the team making UI and functionality design decisions. This triggered my interest in User Interface design.

My love of hypertext led me to build our first company website and, after hiring replacement technical writers, I became the company Web Master. As part of the Marketing organization, I saw the company through two rebranding efforts and redesigned/rebuilt our business-to-business site four times – leading a localization effort for the last version.

I worked closely with our IT department to secure and set up our first hosted environment for cloud-based services, getting my hands dirty in amongst the racks at our new co-location facility.

For about a year, I worked remotely from San Francisco. Besides managing our website, I also was responsible for developing a demo of a partner web portal, an interactive demo and private a usability testing site for customers.
