I help dynamic teams create innovative products that make life better.

Since the start of the “dotcom” era, I have been helping product teams define requirements and create usable, elegant, enjoyable user experiences for a range of unique and specialized products.

I’ve had the privilege of engaging in a wide range of projects, including:

  • Delivering marketing and detailed functional requirements for single products and an entire product family.
  • Designing and building user interface prototypes
  • Designing and developing websites and web-based applications
  • Conducting usability testing
  • Managing product backlogs
  • Creating and implementing key internal processes
  • Defining company branding and logos
  • Writing and editing marketing copy
  • Writing and building Help systems
  • Writing and publishing technical documentation

I work intimately with product managers, development teams and end-users to identify high-value user needs and translate them into developer-ready functional requirements in whatever format and level of detail is necessary.

This may include workflows, wireframes, mockups, demos, design specs, user journeys, story maps, usage scenarios, task analyses, and highly detailed use cases, backed up by usability research and testing.

I have consulted with large and small companies, quickly developing trust and comraderie with internal teams and third-party agencies to tackle complex problems and arrive at potent solutions.

I have an oft-noted talent for listening to engineers and conveying  technical complexities to stakeholders and product managers, helping them and the team make better-informed decisions.

As a start-up veteran, I’m familiar with fast and lean design and development strategies. I love working side-by-side with developers and industrial designers to resolve complex problems using best practices combined with innovative approaches.

When possible, I prefer to focus on the nitty-gritty of detailed interaction design and work closely with visual designers on look and feel, but have certainly been the sole visual designer on numerous projects.

I’ve recently trained as a Scrum Product Owner and Scrum Master so I can thoroughly support both key roles as a UX, Business Analyst or Documentation consultant in an Agile environment and am eager to work with Scrum teams as a Product Owner.

In 2007 I took a break to have kids and have been busy raising and homeschooling two energetic boys while working on small projects for friends and family.

For over 20 years I have been teaching myself new tools, software, standards, paradigms, processes, and practices since I built my first Help file (1995) and Web site (1996). I was designing touch-screen and mobile interfaces 3-6 years before the iPhone debuted and am completely up-to-speed on current mobile design patterns.

Let’s get started bringing your product vision to life!
